The cultural use of the Bärenzwinger as a location for exhibitions and events, lectures and discussions were made possible through the transfer of the property to the Department for Further Education and Culture of Berlin-Mitte with support from interdisciplinary funding in 2017. Since then, artists and scientists have been developing exhibition ideas on-site and progressively presenting them by way of carefully considered site-specific interventions and installations. Currently, under the externally commissioned curatorial direction of Erkan Affan, Sanni Est & Tewa Barnosa, the Bärenzwinger Berlin’s programme centres exclusively on the creative excellence of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour who identify as queer and/or trans.
