Daniel Johnston Has Not Yet Left The Building – Tribute With Films and Music

22:00 –
Lichtblick-Kino

Musician and artist Daniel Johnston and his pop culture laden and at the same time deeply fragle and touching songs to ths day influences such diverse musicians as Jad Fair, Wilco and Lana Del Rey. Songs like "True Love Will Find You in the End" have become standards.

Johnston, who died in 2019, would have turned 61 on January 22. To mark the occasion, Daniel Johnston Day will take place for the third time. The program begins with the short film "Hi How Are You Daniel Johnston" (2015) by Gabriel Sunday, a psychedelic portrait, showing developments since Jeff Feuerzeig's 2005 feature-length documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston." Berlin-based musicians Marco Brosolo, Klaus Beyer, Galya Chikiss, SHOXXX and Sound 8 Orchestra featuring Frank Schoppmeier interpret songs by Johnston, in different languages and as exclusive music clips recorded in an original GDR phone booth. The program is rounded off by previously unreleased footage of Johnston's first performance in Europe in the late 1990s (videographed by curator and art historian Annette Maechtel, now managing director of the nGbK and co-curator with Marco Brosolo of our big summer Daniel Johnston event) and musical surprises.

Soundwatch is funded by the Senate Department for Culture and Europe.
