The essay summarizes the Czech-Brazilian cultural theorist and media philosopher Vilém Flusser’s ideas on the apparatus, codes, and programmed and manipulated society. He ends his texts by highlighting the importance of artists who might be able to play with and against the apparatus and challenge mass media and their preprogrammed functions.

Tunnel To Damascus

20:00 –
silent green

Video by Qusay Awad Sound by Milad Samara and Ayham Allouch

The sound performance and video installation, “Tunnel to Damascus” is presented by three members of the C1 Collective: a Berlin-based self-organized group of Syrian diasporas redefining its identity through electronic music and arts.

The experience of asylum, migration and displacement from the country of origin to another, invites individuals to mentally exist in two parallel realities. Through this experience, networks of heterogeneous images and memories blend together within the subconscious of the individuals involved. Memories of an endangered home - both on the ground and in the mind - generate a tunnel collectively observed and parallelly experienced; not as a nostalgic state but rather as a one way process forward and further.

"Tunnel to Damascus” mimics a non binary mental flow where observation is an invitation to disintegrate from our individual positions. C1 collective perceives the opportunity to ask questions as infinite but the potential to answer as a unique journey, therefore they are rather asking questions than answering them. How can the generated realities impact our inner self image? What did the Syrian diaspora - individually and collectively - lose due to the war in Syria? How do we tunnel our emotions into shareable perspectives by utilizing rather than hiding them?

Sound performed live by Milad Samara and Ayham Allouch, both applying their synths and audio processing techniques in microtonality and generative modulation research. Integrated with field recordings from the Syrian streets, schools and neighborhoods alongside the visual installation created by Qusay Awad through 3D designs and photogrammetry techniques.
