What is the value of touch in the age of digital transformation? Can touch be art? Could it be activism?

In these times of digital conditioning and intellectual isolation, we wish to elevate the experience of touch. The digitalisation of our lives has led many of us to unlearn our very first sense. Touch, a tool for influence and interaction, is a transmitter of action and connection.

Overflow: Inexplicable Parts of the Intimate

“Nature,” William James said, “is but another name we give to excess.” Once seemingly endlessly abundant, life on earth has been revealed in its fragility and ephemerality. Our computational systems, meanwhile, processing endless layers of data, seem ever more like that natural excess of which James wrote. Reliant on rare-earth elements, these machines are in the world they strive to replace and reproduce. The works in this exhibition explore paradoxes of computers-as-nature: through the dark abundance of computed extinction, the uncanny vitality of sensors and circuits, and the otherworldliness of simulation.

Water is the foundation of life, making up 60% of our body. Water-borne organisms produce much of the planet's oxygen. Meanwhile human activity fills waterways and oceans with plastics, industrial waste and diverse chemicals, effecting the metabolisms of most living creatures, ourselves included. This exhibition presents the projects of three artists, Kat Austen, Mary Maggic and Fara Peluso, on water, life and chemical disruption.

    barriere 1996
The space between two persons is cut with a barriere out of light and steel. On the steel plate a group of solar robots waits for energy. The brainwaves of the users are measured by an electrode headband and get analyzed and compared. The result is projected onto the barriere through varying light intensities.
The more the wave spectra of the users equal each other at a certain range, the more a corresponding light is dimmed up. In case of an identical state of both users, all robots move continously.

Imagine the circumstances of the deep sea, several thousand feet beneath the surface. It is dark and the level of oxygen is extremely low. As far as we humans know, only a few species can survive there. One of them is the vampire squid that also inspired the cultural theorist and philosopher Vilém Flusser (1920-1991).

Flusser’s book “Vampyroteuthis Infernalis” is a philosophical fiction that brings us into the everyday life of the vampire squid – as the ultimate “other” from a human perspective – and analyses different phenomenological events of human life and the links between animality and embodiment.

The design and exhibition project will explore these questions through imaginative spatial installations, physical objects and communication apparatus, or new multisensory work-viewer relationships that blur the boundaries between the real and the unreal, the virtual and the physical.
