How we got there and how important it was for Panke.

Essay Artwork

Postcards from the Metaverse speculates on the value of the popular 20th century medium – the postcard – in providing accessible and underrepresented perspectives on a newly- hyped infrastructure

Essay

Former transmediale artistic director Kristoffer Gansing applies a bit of home-grown numerology to reminisce about the secrets of Vorspiel!

Essay

The reSource network has been an extremely valuable resource in the process of establishing and running SPEKTRUM Berlin. It allowed us to connect with like-minded people in the city, to start up new collaborations, and to learn from those facing similar issues in running project spaces.

Essay

The essay summarizes the Czech-Brazilian cultural theorist and media philosopher Vilém Flusser’s ideas on the apparatus, codes, and programmed and manipulated society. He ends his texts by highlighting the importance of artists who might be able to play with and against the apparatus and challenge mass media and their preprogrammed functions.

Essay

From 2011 to 2014, Tatiana Bazzichelli and a team of others designed a sprawling event program called “reSource transmedial culture Berlin,” which picked up on transmediale-related projects and flung them far further.

Berlin University of the Arts

2013_Prototype: Exhibition in the Cloud An interdisciplinary collaboration between Parsons The New School for Design and UdK Berlin, which seeks to challenge and reinvent notions of prototyping and encompass artistic imagination including 3D prints, interactive sculptures, performance-related audio tours, and photographs.

45 Sec! Students from Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and UdK Berlin produced experimental 45 second long miniature radio plays in cooperation with Deutschlandradio Kultur.

2014_Skeleton of hero World War III. An installation about a carrier pigeon found in the cloud with a secret message still attached to its leg. The Utah Data Center are now trying to crack the message code). Visual Communication students researched the carrier pigeon’s image as part of the military-industrial complex from a design perspective, resulting in designing five virtual dovecotes in the showcase.

2015_Measuring Instruments & Technolegacy.
Digitale Klasse students designed technological tools that can be highly expressive and serve as an extension of the human body while telling us something about ourselves far beyond numbers. They presented »old« technologies and their original purpose, before re-appropriating them anew.

Data Sculpting workshop and opening talk by the Spanish New Media design collective Domestic Data Streamers.

2016_ One Century — Five Regimes, Media Memorials in Berlin’s Cityscape Digitale Klasse students created a multimedia tableau of noteworthy regions of radical upheaval in Berlin, the only city that has experienced five regimes during the 20th century: the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, the Nazi regime, the division and subsequent reunification of West and East Germany. Every political period has left its own marks while simultaneously blurring and distorting the relics of the previous regime.

2017_Extensions of Perception Design students revealed hidden information and made it visible and tangible. With digitisation moving into all aspects of society, data plays an increasingly large role in our lives, yet it often conceals a truth that lurks below the surface. From electronic sensing to prediction algorithms, from big data to metadata, from machine perception to personalised feeds – these often obscured yet highly significant structures are expanding in social, political, and cultural impact.

2018_Fold/Unfold. Interface and Interaction Design students analysed the potential of the fold as a digital interface technology: What part does material as interface play? How can we use smart materials in order to develop self assembling structures? And which spatial or aesthetic opportunities do folding techniques offer us as designers? Opening talk by Christophe Guberan, Product Designer und MIT Self Assembly Lab.

2019_Imaginary Spaces – Spaces of Communication. Students of the Class of Spatial and Exhibition Design examined how human-space relationships can be reinterpreted in the age of advancing digitization in order to produce future hybrid forms of spatial communication design with imaginative spatial constructions, physical objects, spatial installations, transmedia environments, and new multisensory work-viewer relationships that blur the boundaries between the real and the unreal, and the virtual and the physical.

The Virtual Void as Artistic Space Opening talk by Banz & Bowinkel.

2020 MOTHER. Students from Design for the Economy and Advertising create a space for critical reflection, underlining the need for immediate reaction to the global ecological crisis and social misconduct. They developed persuasive concepts of communication expressed in transmedia projects, from creative multimedia campaigns to speculative design approaches and opportunities to act.

Let’ s speculate! Enabling transformation through communication Finissage talks by Henrik Adler and Gesine Last, Fraunhofer CERRI/Center for Responsible Research and Innovation.

2021 Engaging with e-static textiles. PhD student Ramyah Gowrishankar explored the challenges and opportunities of using static electricity as a resource in the design and development of e-textiles through the process of making, discovering, and experimenting with the electrostatic generator circuit.

What Could Possibly Go Wrong? Visual Communication students created graphic designs damaged by the impact of future climate change.

Concretely Unimaginable. New Media Class students reflected upon the increasing uncertainty of trustworthy information, the dependency on online media and big tech companies, the long lockdown time, and lack of direct personal interaction.
