The reSource network has been an extremely valuable resource in the process of establishing and running SPEKTRUM Berlin. It allowed us to connect with like-minded people in the city, to start up new collaborations, and to learn from those facing similar issues in running project spaces.

Essay

The essay summarizes the Czech-Brazilian cultural theorist and media philosopher Vilém Flusser’s ideas on the apparatus, codes, and programmed and manipulated society. He ends his texts by highlighting the importance of artists who might be able to play with and against the apparatus and challenge mass media and their preprogrammed functions.

Essay

From 2011 to 2014, Tatiana Bazzichelli and a team of others designed a sprawling event program called “reSource transmedial culture Berlin,” which picked up on transmediale-related projects and flung them far further.

Attachment Issues solo show by Andrey Shental 31 January - 1 February 2026

Opening: 30 January, 6 - 9.30 pm

Expressions found in German, Russian, Polish, and other languages—such as the German eine Klette sein (“to be a burdock burr”)—have no direct equivalent in English. Literally, these phrases describe a person who clings, who cannot detach. Such linguistic metaphors originate in a concrete botanical phenomenon known as epizoochory: a mode of seed dispersal in which certain plants, including burdock (Arctium lappa), propagate by hitching a ride on passing bodies. Burdock burrs (spiky seed pods) are particularly sticking; once attached to fabric, furs or skin, they are difficult to remove.

The exhibition Attachment Issues centres on common psychological patterns of anxious and avoidant behaviour to critically reassess bucolic visions of “wild nature” as well as the human longing for the “more-than-human” world. These roles are not fixed identities but unstable positions that shift and reverse through relational dynamics. Is it possible to build a “secure” relationship with the natural Other or is it precisely the tension between these centrifugal and centripetal forces that binds the two together?

Andrey Shental is a Berlin-based artist and art writer working across film, landscape performance, environmental interventions, critical and fictional texts. Informed by a background in philosophy and a fascination with sublime natural forces, his practice explores questions of the domination of nature and the ideological biases embedded in techno-scientific systems. Through queer-ecological performative strategies, he often uses his own body to stage relations of attachment, submission, and dissolution that challenge pastoral imaginaries. In his films, Shental endows more-than-human agencies with political force, questioning anthropocentric hierarchies and merging natural and social histories.
