The reSource network has been an extremely valuable resource in the process of establishing and running SPEKTRUM Berlin. It allowed us to connect with like-minded people in the city, to start up new collaborations, and to learn from those facing similar issues in running project spaces.

Essay

The essay summarizes the Czech-Brazilian cultural theorist and media philosopher Vilém Flusser’s ideas on the apparatus, codes, and programmed and manipulated society. He ends his texts by highlighting the importance of artists who might be able to play with and against the apparatus and challenge mass media and their preprogrammed functions.

Holger Friese: unprompted

Holger Friese: unprompted · Zentrum für Netzkunst

· presented as part of Vorspiel at /rosa

opening: Saturday, 17 January 2026 at 7 pm exhibition: 20 January – 22 February 2026, 3–7 pm

artist talk and data entry session: 20 February 2026, 5 pm

venue: /rosa Heidelberger Str. 28, 12059 Berlin

In his latest project, unpromted, Holger Friese explores the use of generative AI in photography. Friese took well-known photos from West German media and used AI to regenerate them. The artist cuts the photos in half and uses the built-in Adobe Firefly to let the 'Generative Fill' feature calculate the rest of the image without any prompting. Rather than using models such as Midjourney or ChatGPT, Friese returned to Photoshop — a software that has been used for decades in various digital art practices and has created its own discourse. The project can thus be viewed in the context of the shift in photography from lens-based tools and cameras to a new generative paradigm. The act of generating a significant photo also puts in test the idea of a shared collective memory. Does the contemporary audience still know these historical images? And does the AI model know these photos from the datasets? What do these generative tools mean for history? What does it mean to remember or to generate memory?
