i think i am - opening - julia herold, julian netzer, merani schilcher, sebastian wolf

18:00 –
S29

i think i am gathers works that revolve around gestures of continuity. Small, repetitive acts through which systems reassure themselves that they are still running. A body inflates and collapses, a face mimics, an arm draws, a workflow optimizes itself again and again.

A continuous effort to appear intact, yet none of these actions aims at completion.

The exhibition takes on the form of a nondescript voice that has not yet arrived at being, but is circling the idea of it. Not a declaration of existence, but a conditional rehearsal. i think i am reads like a protocol testing itself against the world, enamored with human gestures and their promise of meaning. Breathing, smiling, optimizing, repeating: each action an attempt to approximate what being might feel like. To them, identity is not a stable state but so far only a feedback loop.

Cycles of renewal promise life while exhausting it. Optimization frames surveillance as progress.Friendliness becomes an obligation rather than a choice.

Soon enough, what appears as expression reveals itself as calibration. The works ask when repetition becomes ritual, when it turns hollow, and whether a shared moment can still emerge from acts that were never meant to mean anything significant. In this fragile space, i think i am lingers as a question: could continuous performance, at some point, tip from mere operation into something that begins to resemble being?
